Timeline
If you've read the book, don't see the movie. If you haven't read the book, you still might not wanna see it. Brilliant book, but the movie added characters, changed the sex of some characters, removed characters (yes, I am talking about major characters), and changed the character of most of the rest of the characters; not to mention going straight from the beginning to the end and leaving out everything from page 20 to page 489. I figured they were gonna screw it up, but I never thought it was possible to screw it up thatbadly. It pretty much made no sense at all, and they made it seem like it was just ordinary time travel as in other novels, when in the book, it was completely different, and totally awesome. Anyway, I'll say it again...read the book, but stay away from the film!

Thanks for the warring Kat but after seeing that horrible trailer I had no intention of seeing it anyway. The problem I have with Crichton is he is very good at coming up with really good ideas, however I personally think he is a terrible writer, severally lacking in most fields and underachieving in others. It's a shame really because as I said his ideas are very good, sometimes bloody good and I wish that his ideas could be put into the hands of a more talented author.

What fields would those be, just out of curiosity? Ok but understand that people often interpret the same information differently and now that I think about it I probably was a little harsh in calling him terrible, there are plenty of far worse ones out there, I just don't think he's very good. Fist of all I think he had difficulty with characters, the thing that stands out most in my mind is that they seem to have an unnatural inconsistency about them. He is also not shy about using characters purely to drive parts of the plot forward and while I admit at times it may be necessary I don't think he hides it well. I also don't think he is very good at building suspense, he reminds me of a young virgin who gets so excited they spill their load early. Plot twists are often given away long before they happen and he seems to plod along at a specific pace all the time rather than taking the time to slow right down for a while. His descriptions are not bad but they could be better, while I may always be able to clearly visualize what's going on I've never felt I was actually there like I have with so many other novels. There we're other comments but it has been a while since I've read a Crichton so I don't want to make an idiot of myself.

Well, man, I disagree with ya on pretty much all of those points for specific reasons . . . but it'd take a little long to go through the books to cite those reasons, and it's not really worth arguing over, anyway. Just wanted to know what bugged ya about his stuff.

I'd have to agree with Jim on this one...one of the reasons I hated Timeline so much was that I from reading the book I had a very good idea of how the movie should be done...they could've mangled it a little, and I'd still have been fine, but damn!...oh, here I go again...I'll shut up now.
